Oatley Bay

Oatley Bay is between Connells Point and Oatley and is the sixth bay from the mouth of the river on the northern side. Other bays from the mouth are Sandringham, Kogarah, Shipwright's, Kyle and Connell's.

Oatley Bay was much longer before World War 11 but then it was gradually filled in to form parklands and a wetland area to cleanse stormwater prior to entering the Georges River. Back in the early 1950's the upper reaches of the bay provided great spots for children to play and to camp in the caves which existed along its western shore.

There is a boat ramp, jetty and pontoon at the end of the bay providing easy access to the Georges River for pleasurecraft and a popular fishing spot. Many modern homes are built along the bay and a number have their own jetties. A number of boats are moored in the bay.

Where to begin

Normally you would expect to begin at the beginning but in the case of a river, it can often be more logical to start where it ends, and enters the ocean. In the case of the Georges River, Botany Bay is at its mouth and to some degree this is the beginning because it was here in 1770 that Capt James Cook landed (at Kurnell) and discovered the Georges.

These photos were taken on a bright sunny morning. The first shows the river mouth with Botany Bay lin the distance. The other two photos are taken looking up river. All photos show the expanse of sand on the western side of the Bay which runs along Lady Robinson beach towards Ramsgate, Brighton and Mascot International Airport.

The Georges River

The Georges River starts betwwen Campbelltown and Appin in South Western Sydney and runs into Botany Bay at Dolls Point. Along the river are many picturesque bays, beaches and picnic spots.

My aim is to capture the beauty of the river in photos and words.
